thanks for nice post. i want to get a dehydrator for under $60. most I've seen at that price are round
You are welcome, Savoie. I hope you're dehydrating very soon! :)
Thanks so much for this. I found a dehydrator in a box never remembered getting it lol Will most certainly will use this
Lol, you have to make friends with your lonely dehydrator! :)
Help. I have just brought a dehyrator but don,t have a recipe book ,i would like to know what fruit &vegetables can be dehyrated and for how long
if you can help i would appreciated as i don,t seem able to find the answers on the net .
Almost any fruit and vegetable can be dehydrated. Time varies because it depends on how moist the fruit/veg is.
Don't try to do research generally. Just pick a fruit or veg (example apple) and google that. Each fruit/veg is different. :) suggestions - apples, pineapple, pears,
Any quick recipes, snacks, meals etc that don't take as long in the dehydrator yet still raw vegan?
Hi Rayer, you bet! I've got TONS!
Check out my recipe index, there's an icon for each recipe that explains what equipment is required - www.therawtarian.com/raw-food-recipes
Just wondering, why not a round dehydrator?
If that's all you have is a round dehydrator, then go for it! But if buying new, it's best to go with a square one with trays.
*The air doesn't circulate as well so it's harder to dehydrate stuff.
*Usually you can't control the temperature.
*Usually there is a big hole in the middle, so it's really hard to make a sheet of crackers.
I found Amazon has the best price on the Excalibur 9 tray. I save quite a bit. Still has the warranty of ten years.
Thanks, Kenny. Good to know! :)
Hi there! Wanting to get a dehydrator for under $60. most I've seen at that price are round. why do you say not to get a round one? Thanks! Love your site.
Hi Deborah! Round dehydrators don't circulate the air as efficiently Also, 8-10 trays is optimal. Vegikiln is a lower-priced brand that will get the job done. Check out my article -- https://www.therawtarian.com/raw-food-appliances-etc.
Raw Rules, and you have created an excellent guide. One comment I have about the dehydrator itself, and that is that the square style, like Excalibur, cannot keep the temperature steady. You can prove this with a simple experiment. My test was to dry some mung, wheat, and radish sprouts at the 95-100*F setting, and if the sprouts were able to continue growing after re-soaking, then enzymes were not destroyed. Excalibur failed, but other round tray dehydrators, built to move air, were able to maintain the temperature setting. The round tray is not as convenient as square, but does not take much longer to bring the humidity to ‘crunchy.’
Over the past four years, I have found enzymes important in the raw diet – or else the food is NOT raw.
So you may consider a round tray, adapt your packaging, and live to sprout again.
Fall is in the air and that means…. APPLES! Check out this sweet little video! First Alli.
I want to share this sweet little video with you. It starts with a super delicious recipe: Blueberry Datorade! .75 lb pitted dates 2 cups blueberries 1 liter pure water Pit dates and Place them in a powerful blender, If you do.
Considering that most of these recipes will make food that can last for a long time (about 2 weeks to a month). You will need the following:
• A large basin: For holding and mixing the ingredients
• Meat: Enough for 2 to 4 weeks
• Freezer space: Ensure you have enough freezer space to hold the items. Otherwise, proportion as necessary.
• Rubber gloves: Ensure your rubber gloves are safe to handle food
• Large freezer bags: Get freezer bags or big 4-5kg lunch boxes to store the food
• Antibacterial wipes: Remember, you will be working with raw meat, so you will need to wipe things down after preparation
This recipe is for those who want a simple recipe that’s easy to prepare and will last a long time. Now this recipe will make 14kg of raw dog food or about 30 pounds. Now before you go crazy, we will admit that’s a lot of meat! However, you can separate it into daily portions and kept in the freezer until you are ready. This I a great option for working class people who don’t have the time to prepare meals for their dogs daily.
In any case, 14 kg is about one freezer drawer in a medium to large fridge when packed away if you pack carefully and economically.
• Chopped or Minced Meats: 22 pounds (10 kilograms) of minced meat with bone
• Organ Meat: 4.5 pound (2 kilograms) of organs
• Par-cooked Vegetables: 4.5 pound (2 kilograms) of vegetables
The following additions aren’t entirely necessary, but are great for improving taste and overall nutritional value:
• Eggs: 3-6 whole raw eggs
• Kelp Power: A few tablespoons of kelp powder or gluten free brewers yeast
• Oils: 3 tablespoons of oils whether it’s cod liver, flax or hemp oil. You don’t necessarily need this is your dog’s diet is rich in fish.
1. We will start off by getting the minces and organ meats and putting them into the mixing tub. Ensure they are cut up in bite size pieces
2. The next step will be par-cooking the vegetables until they’re soft. You can boil them until they are mushy if you prefer
3. Now time or the additions. You don’t necessarily need then – just add the additions as you may prefer
4. Allow the vegetables to cool down completely
5. Now mix everything up with your gloved hand or a large spoon
6. Now for additions such as eggs, those may be added as you are dishing out the meal daily
7. Now package in a lunchbox and store away in the fridge
Raw food recipes
The raw food craze has well and truly swept the country, with raw food restaurants popping up all over. It may sound obscure at first, but actually there is plenty for foodies to enjoy if taking on a raw food diet. It’s not all about salads - carpaccios, tartares and ceviches are all super-cheffy raw food preparations bursting with fresh flavour and nutritional benefits.
Our contributors have also been hard at work coming up with a selection of sweet raw recipes, proving that baking isn't the only way to enjoy a sweet treat. Madeleine Shaw's raw chocolate brownie recipe is made with a heady combination of sticky Medjool dates, walnuts and coconut oil for a gloriously gooey consistency. Deb Durrant's Strawberry and pansy tart would make a lovely raw dinner party recipe.
A dehydrator is a raw foodie's best friend, as you can heat food to low temperatures while it still being classified as raw. Test out your new toy on Deb Durrant's Kale crisps.
